Labeling systems in the EU: advantages and disadvantages."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Have you ever noticed that, on packages from the EU,\nthere is much more information shown than on Ukrainian ones? For example, \u2015 the\namount of fiber, salt, trans-fats and so on. Besides this, in the EU, there are\nlabeling marks that show right away \u2015 the product is healthy or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such labeling systems aim to inform customers quickly\nabout the level of product safety. In the European Union, the struggle against\nobesity and food-related diseases has been conducted for some time now: public\nhealth organizations raise food awareness in society by organizing information\ncampaigns, and they are also fighting with product corporations, which have to\ndisplay all the information related to the product nutritional value and\ndangers, if there are any, on the package.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The most common labeling systems<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p> Nutri-score \u2015 is a system that is made of 5 letters: A, B, C, D and E, \u2015 where A means a product that has the highest nutritional value, and E indicates the lowest. The algorithm of Nutri-score compares harmful and healthy food components: adds scores for fiber, proteins, fruits, vegetables and nuts; the scores are removed if a product contains too many calories, salt, saturated fats and sugar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/organicinfo.ua\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/26022020-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6860\" srcset=\"https:\/\/organicinfo.ua\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/26022020-2.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/organicinfo.ua\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/26022020-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/organicinfo.ua\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/26022020-2-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/organicinfo.ua\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/26022020-2-195x146.jpg 195w, https:\/\/organicinfo.ua\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/26022020-2-465x349.jpg 465w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The system was designed in France and selected by the\nFrench government as the most effective as compared to other systems. Also,\nNutri-score is recommended in Belgium, Spain, Germany and Denmark. But this is\nonly a recommendation \u2015 producers are not forced to label with\nNutri-score.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yuka \u2015 is a French startup that developed a mobile\napplication for calculating the nutritional value of products. You just scan a\nbarcode and the information appears on the screen. The algorithm is similar to\nNutri-score and is based, primarily, on the balance of healthy and harmful\ncomponents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Siga \u2015 is a system very different from Nutri-score and\nYuka as it defines the nutritional value based not on the components, but on\nthe level of their processing: the more a product is processed, the less value\nit has; for example, an apple is healthier than juice or jam. Siga can be\ncompared with a system designed in Brazil \u2015 Nova. Nova also classifies products\nusing the level of processing and showed very good results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/organicinfo.ua\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/26022020-3-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6871\" srcset=\"https:\/\/organicinfo.ua\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/26022020-3-1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/organicinfo.ua\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/26022020-3-1-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/organicinfo.ua\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/26022020-3-1-768x461.jpg 768w, https:\/\/organicinfo.ua\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/26022020-3-1-195x117.jpg 195w, https:\/\/organicinfo.ua\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/26022020-3-1-465x279.jpg 465w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Siga labeling is used by French brand Biocoop. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advantages and disadvantages<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Though Nutri-score is an important step in fighting\nfood-related diseases, this system has its gaps. We cannot take into account\nonly the components of a product while calculating its value \u2015 how much the\nproduct was processed is extremely important. There were products detected that\nget high results in Nutri-score system, but cannot be called healthy at all. So\nin this case, we not just get a labeling system that doesn\u2019t work but also\nencourage customers not to limit the consumption of such a fake \u201chealthy\u201d product.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another disadvantage of Nutri-score is ignoring trans-fats. Somehow only saturated fats are taken into account and this doesn\u2019t seem right at all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Siga is a more professional system from the view of today\u2019s nutrition science because the level of processing is being linked to negative health effects more and more now. Also, low-processed food rarely contains high levels of sugar or salt, and regarding saturated fats (can be found in meat and milk) \u2014 they are not bad for our body at all, when consumed in moderate amounts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to choose healthy products if there is no labeling?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, even in the EU, the number of labeled\nproducts is low. Moreover, as we\u2019ve already discovered, existing systems are\nfar from being perfect, so, for now, it\u2019s better to learn the main principles\nof healthy eating on our own. In general, nutritionists advise buying packed\nproducts as little as possible: healthy food is not the food that can be stored\nin a package for months, conserved in sugar, salt and low-quality fats. Healthy\nfood means vegetables and fruits, fish, eggs etc. When you enter a store, try\nto move around the perimeter \u2015 that\u2019s where perishable produce and\nrefrigerators can be found. Avoid rows in the middle \u2014 they have a lot of\nhigh-processed products (except the rows with grain products).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The implementation of labeling systems is important\nfor global changes in public health.
