Labelling of organic products is the final stage of their production as products can only be labelled as organic if they comply with the requirements of the legislation on organic production, circulation and labelling of organic products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the main principles of organic production is the traceability of the entire production process: from the field to the finished product. An organic product must not only be produced in compliance with the relevant standards, but also contain at least 95% organic ingredients of agricultural origin (by weight, excluding water and table salt). The entire process of organic production is closely monitored by the certification body and is confirmed with a certificate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, two standards of organic production are most widely used in Ukraine: the standard equivalent to the EU organic legislation and the Ukrainian standard (detailed rules) for organic production and circulation of organic products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU standards have long been used in Ukraine same as the EU label for organic food and feed, the so-called Euroleaf (a leaf made of stars on a green background). However, the Ukrainian standards and organic labelling began to be implemented only at the end of 2023 so the state logo for organic products<\/a>\u00a0 is still quite new and unfamiliar to consumers.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does a consumer have to know and how to check the correctness of labelling?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

In August 2023, the State Register of Operators that produce products in accordance with the requirements of Ukrainian legislation in the field of organic production, circulation and labelling of organic products was launched. The register is maintained and constantly updated by the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine on its official website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of the end of April 2024, the register contained 179 operators, of which 149 had organic status and, accordingly, were already entitled to label their products with the Ukrainian state logo for organic products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting from 1 July 2024, labelling with the state logo will become mandatory for all operators. The use of the words \u201corganic product\u201d in product names and trademarks, as well as labelling products as organic in the absence of a valid certificate confirming the production and\/or circulation of organic products in accordance with Ukrainian law, will be prohibited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, soon we can expect an increase in the number of organic products with the relevant Ukrainian labelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
