This year’s celebration of the Organic Day in Ukraine was marked by an important event: the first product was labelled with the Ukrainian state logo for organic products. <\/h5>\n\n\n\n

This product is organic Carpathian herbal tea from Molfar Eco LLC<\/a>, which is already offered by Ukrainian Railways in its trains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us have a closer look at the Ukrainian organic logo, learn about the history of its creation, and its meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It should be noted that it took 9 long years from the creation of the logo to its first appearance on the packaging of an organic product, during which the Ukrainian legislation in organic production, circulation and labelling of organic products was in the process of establishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The need to develop a Ukrainian logo appeared after the previous law on organic production came into force (the Law on Production and Circulation of Organic Agricultural Products and Raw Materials was in force from 2014 to 2019<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In September 2014, at the initiative of Organic Ukraine NGO and Information Center \u201cGreen Dossier\u201d, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine announced a competition to create a logo for labelling certified organic products in Ukraine, which would help to raise public awareness about Ukrainian certified organic products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The competition was supported by the Swiss Confederation within the framework of the Swiss-Ukrainian project “Organic Market Development in Ukraine” (2012-2016) (now the Swiss-Ukrainian programme “Higher Value Added Trade from the Organic and Dairy Sectors in Ukraine” (QFTP)<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU experience and practice<\/a> became the basis for the competition. A special web page was created where the competition entries were posted. A total of about 170 proposals were received, and 76 participants from 11 oblasts of Ukraine took part in the competition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the first stage, a “popular” vote was held during which 5 finalists were selected. At the second stage, the final evaluation was carried out by an expert committee consisting of specialists from the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine, representatives of organic producers, legal and certification experts, representatives of NGOs and, of course, art historians and designers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official awarding ceremony and presentation of the logo took place only on 5 February 2016, after a long procedure of expert evaluation and approval of the logo by the relevant order of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine. <\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Polina Makarova, a graduate of Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts, became the winner. She combined two circles of yellow (sun) and blue (water), in the organic logo, and together these colours form a green leaf in the middle, which also symbolises the process of photosynthesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 14 June 2017, Ukrpatent (Intellectual Property Office) decided to register the state logo for organic products as a trademark in favour of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine, which is designated by law as the sole executive body responsible for the formation and implementation of the state agricultural policy in the field of organic production, circulation and labelling of organic products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the adoption of the updated Law of Ukraine “On Basic Principles and Requirements for Organic Production, Circulation and Labelling of Organic Products”, it took several years to develop and enact bylaws, train inspectors, and prepare explanatory materials to ensure that the certification system in accordance with Ukrainian law was properly implemented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And finally, on 17 August this year, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine announced the launch of the State Register of Operators<\/a> that produce products in compliance with the legislation in organic production, circulation and labelling of organic products. This was the final step towards the use of the Ukrainian state logo for organic products, which we can already see on some Ukrainian products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
